Two Book Recommendations
Folks,
I just finished reading two really great books about Prisons and Prisoner Education
Going Up the River: Travels in a Prison Nation by Joseph Hallinan is an fascinating/horrifying look at the history of incarceration in this country, examining the socio-economic realities of the Prison Industrial Complex and the impact of mandatory sentencing laws on the prison population.
Couldn't Keep it To Myself by Wally Lamb and the Women of York Correctional Institution is a moving collection of stories written by several female inmates at the super max women's prison in CT. This book was recently featured in a story on the TV program 60 Minutes. The book is a testament to the therapuetic benefit of prisoner education programs, and is the most important book you will read this year!
