6.9 Million People in Jail or on Probation

A record 6.9 million adults were incarcerated or on probation or parole last year, nearly 131,000 more than in 2002, according to a Justice Department study.

Put another way, about 3.2 percent of the adult U.S. population, or 1 in 32 adults, were incarcerated or on probation or parole at the end of last year. "

How many packages does PBP send out?

Between December 1, 2003 and June 30, 2004, the Prison Book Program sent out 3710 packages of books to prisoners across the country.  That's an average of 530 per month and 132 per week!  That's at least 7420 books!

The numbers are even more staggering when you consider that this was made possible entirely by volunteers.  All of the books were donated, as was the money to pay for the postage to send the packages!

Heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteers and donors who make this operation possible!
